I’ve been sick with a cold for the past week.
I got rained on and didn’t change out of my wet clothes… so, here we are. Feeling a cold coming on, the next day, I took some Berocca. It’s the orange tablet that you dunk in a glass of water and drink. It’s what I take whenever I am starting to feel sick, and it usually stops the cold in its tracks. Not this time, though. Well, the cold was not as bad as it could have been, so I guess it helped.
It’s been more than a week and I only have the tail-end of the cold. I’m almost well except I still had a bit of phlegm and itchy throat for the past 4 days, and it’s taking its time to go away.
Someone told me to chew on a small slice of ginger, so I did. That helped significantly! My phlegm just melted and the itching in my throat was gone for a while. It came back the next day though. So I thought I’d drink some ginger tea throughout the day.
Here’s how I made my ginger tea (salabat) to help with my cold:
- Slice some ginger thinly.
- Boil the ginger slices in some water until you reach desired brew strength.
- Add preferred sweetener to taste. Here I added a teaspoon of brown sugar.
- Make sure all the sugar is melted.
- Pour the liquid into a mug. Add more water if you want to dilute it.
I candied the remaining ginger by adding another teaspoon of brown sugar and a tiny amount of water and let the sugar melt and eventually candy the ginger. Candied ginger is delicious!
I think most of us forget about the simple home remedies that have worked for generations. It’s time we remember them. Why? They’re natural, and they’re relatively cheap compared to pharmaceuticals.
While drinking the hot ginger tea, I could feel the mucus behind my nose and in my throat melting. Make sure to expel them and eventually they’ll be all gone and you’ll be cured from cold.
