No More UnliSurf Unlimited Internet Why It Should Concern You

Update (Nov. 2, 2015) – Unlisurf is no longer available, please read http://www.baratako.com/smart-unlisurf-ending-replaced-by-surfmax/

Update (8/29/2015): Here is the updated list of Unlisurf and Supersurf promos still being offered.

Update (8/12/2015): Smart UnliSurf for Prepaid is available until further notice! Also, please check out our How to Get the Best Mobile Internet series.

However, the Unlisurf offers are not promoted or listed on their website anymore. I got these updates by calling Smart and checking their FB page.

You can try to register to our SMART Bro UnliSURF 995 and SMART Prepaid UnliSurf 999. Both have unlimited surfing valid for 30 days, for only P995 and P999. To register for SMART Bro UnliSURF, just text UNLISURF 995 to 2200. For our SMART Prepaid UnliSurf, text UNLI 999 to 211. Thanks.

Update: SmartBro’s UnliSurf has been extended to Jan. 31, 2015! Also, please check out our How to Get the Best Mobile Internet series.
After several days of people being unable to subscribe to UnliSurf, on Jan. 7, SmartBro has extended their UnliSurf promos to Jan. 31, 2015.

Here are the denominations of SMART Bro UnliSURF, enjoy 1 day unlimited surfing for P50, 2 days for P85, 5 days for P200, 7 days for P250, 15 days for P500 or 30 days for P995. To avail, text UNLISURF 50, UNLISURF 85, UNLISURF 200, UNLISURF 250, UNLISURF 500 or UNLISURF 995 to 2200. Hope this helps.

No More Unlisurf

People have been trying to renew their registration to the various Unlisurf subscriptions and found that they couldn’t. It turns out that SmartBro has stopped offering its popular Unlisurf internet promos. According to their Facebook page, their unlisurf promos ended on Dec. 31, 2014, and they no longer offer any unlimited internet package.

UPDATE: Unlisurf is back due to public demand. But we don’t know how long it will be available, and it is now an add-on rather than the highlighted feature of any postpaid plan. March 3, 2015

SmartBro Big Bytes

They are suggesting that subscribers check out their Big Bytes offers instead. This a big step down if one is used to Unlisurf – downloading gigabytes of data a day and watching a lot of streaming videos. There are places where DSL is not yet available, so mobile internet is the only internet option. It really sucks when you have to start monitoring and limiting your internet usage.

To be fair, Big Bytes provides a lot more volume data than Globe’s GoSurf or Smart’s Always ON. For just P20, you get 100MB instead of just 45MB (Always ON). That’s more than twice the volume!

However, a big downside is the shorter validity period. For example, is that for P100, you get 700MB of data (you only get 100MB on other promos), BUT the validity period for the Big Bytes 100 is only for 3 days.

And for what it’s worth, they also give you unlimited music streaming from Spinnr.

Name Data Inclusion Price Text Keyword To 2200
Big Bytes 20 100MB plus unlimited music streaming from Spinnr, all valid for 1 day Php 20.00 Big Bytes 20
Big Bytes 30 150MB plus unlimited music streaming from Spinnr, all valid for 1 day Php 30.00 Big Bytes 30
Big Bytes 50 250MB plus unlimited music streaming from Spinnr, all valid for 3 days Php 50.00 Big Bytes 50
Big Bytes 100 700MB plus unlimited music streaming from Spinnr, all valid for 3 days Php 100.00 Big Bytes 100
Big Bytes 150 1GB plus unlimited music streaming from Spinnr, all valid for 5 days Php 150.00 Big Bytes 150
Big Bytes 199 1GB plus unlimited music streaming from Spinnr, all valid for 7 days Php 199.00 Big Bytes 199
Big Bytes 300 2.1GB plus unlimited music streaming from Spinnr, all valid for 10 days Php 300.00 Big Bytes 300
Big Bytes 500 3.5GB plus unlimited music streaming from Spinnr, all valid for 15 days Php 500.00 Big Bytes 500
Big Bytes 999 5GB plus unlimited music streaming from Spinnr, all valid for 30 days Php 999.00 Big Bytes 999

Conclusion

Gone are the happy days of unlimited torrenting and streaming for people without DSL or Fibr or anything similar.

SmartBro’s Big Bytes offer is good enough for the occasional need for internet. If I was going out of town for the weekend, I’d probably get a Big Bytes 100 to keep me connected to email, social media, chat apps, surfing my favorite sites, Waze, Dropbox, and watching Youtube. But I definitely would not be using it to download my favorite shows.

If this was my family’s main source of internet, there is no way 5GB (Big Bytes 999) would be enough. 5GB would last us 2, maybe 3 days.

Even if you have DSL, this should concern you because your DSL can break. Then what are you going to do? The last time our DSL modem broke, it took PLDT 2 weeks to send a replacement. In that time, we relied on a pocket wifi and Unlisurf. I imagine that if I was limited to only using 100MB per day of internet for work and everything else, I would probably go postal. What if they suddenly started metering DSL, too?

It’s no secret that the majority of internet users in the Philippines need internet for 1. Facebook (social media), 2. downloading free stuff (like “free” movies, songs, tv shows, anime, software, etc…), 3. online gaming, 4. web surfing. The biggest data usage is from “downloading stuff”. The reason nobody buys DVDs in Quiapo anymore isn’t because the authorities cracked down on the place. It’s because nobody watches DVDs anymore. People have learned to download things. The addiction to the things they watch is still there – they just changed media from DVDs to computers/tablets/phones.

So what are these people going to do now? They will probably end up camping out at their friends’ houses that have DSL. Or they go back to the old-fashioned way of swapping USB sticks and portable hard drives and copying files from each other manually.

Of course, I have to have a disclaimer saying that I don’t support piracy. But if there was a good, affordable alternative, people wouldn’t be pirating! Spotify is a good example. I know many people who stopped downloading music because they started using Spotify (with free streaming via Globe). They didn’t consciously decide to stop downloading pirated music – it was just that they were happy with Spotify and didn’t feel the need to download pirated music anymore. If you have a premium Spotify account, you can “download” music on the app and listen to them offline. The P129/month for the premium account is still a bit high for regular people in the Philippines but it’s acceptable (you can get it free with GoSurf).

The reason people download pirated shows is because for some reason or other, it’s not available when they want it. Most people watch their tv shows after dinner to relax and de-stress. Many people also binge-watch on weekends, holidays, days off, sick days. But the shows are not being shown at the times people are available. Most of the shows I like are shown at odd hours of the day (live via satellite), when most people are at work. The ability to pause and replay is also something people want. One does not have to miss scenes from their favorite show when the phone rings, or when a child cries and demands mommy.

If there was a local version of Hulu, Netflix, or on-demand satellite TV, I’d gladly pay the subscription as long as it was affordable (P500 a month or less, or even up to P999, the cost of an unli internet package) and there was a very good selection of shows on demand (thousands of new shows, old shows, etc…) and unlimited viewing. It should be as convenient, or even more convenient, than downloading stuff, and can be viewed on all your gadgets and TVs (even just screen mirroring is fine). If such a service were available, I think most people would drop their cable subscription and channel the money towards this instead. Even if it had advertising, that would be fine, as long as it was not excessive.

Dept. of Justice to Telcos – Unlimited means Unlimited!

Finally, I really think that this change was brought about by the DOJ’s warning to the telcos about misleading customers with “unlimited” offers that were not really unlimited. Unlimited means unlimited – no data throttling, no data capping, no Fair Usage Policy, or else!

Here’s the link to the DOJ’s Advisory. For me, this is the best thing Sec. de Lima has done and what I will remember her for.

Unfortunately, the telcos have responded by discontinuing their unlimited internet offers.

I hope someone comes up with a good alternative, like, say, neighborhood wifi hotspots where you can pay like P20 to access fast wifi, unlimited, for 8 hours.

Hello! I don’t think Smart offers any type of unlisurf anymore, they replaced it with Big Bytes but you can ask their customer service on FB or Twitter @smartcares to be sure.

PLDT, GLOBE just put their limits on broadbands and DSL. internet life for heavy users are over. i consume 2gb per day on my internet. that would be 60gb per month. not including big bytes downloads.

I heard about Globe putting data caps on their wired DSL, but haven’t heard about PLDT yet… We also use GBs of internet every day.

Hi Just, thank you for your comment! Actually, it’s all still a bit confusing. Smart has made several statements in their FB page that they no longer offer Unlisurf. And then in other FB comments, Smart says that they still offer Unlisurf, but only for the 1-2 day Unlisurf promos for Smartbro, I think.

What’s clear is that they no longer offer any unlisurf plans for postpaid, and unlisurf is no longer included in their list of prepaid offers on their website.

But glad you were still able to avail of the Unlisurf 85 🙂

Regarding the 1 and 2 day smart bro unlisurf: Does anyone know the bandwidth cap (limit) on it? I found. Here at our local 7-11 store they have P200 5day unlisurf, but I have no idea on the data limit on it…surely it is not ‘unlimited’. I wonder if it even 1gb?!

Hi Drew, so far I haven’t heard people complain about a low data cap for Smart Unlisurf, for now. I think it is “unlimited” for now, unless you really use a lot of data. That could change though.

May password screen ulit! I’m having suspicions na data cap ng Smart ‘to. Di ko na ni-register ulit agad. What’ya think, guys?

Madaya smart. Unli daw kahit hindi.

Thanks for your comment……..my contract on globe wimax is going to be terminated (beyond my control) here at my apartment so I will have to find my own internet. I will buy an unlocked plug in home modem like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unlocked-Huawei-B593u-12-4G-LTE-Wireless-Broadband-Modem-FDD-CAT4-WiFi-Router-/141741452581?hash=item210072ed25

and then use the prepaid unli sims ( i can use smart and any sim that has good deals such as smart bro)

    What do you think?

Hi Drew 🙂 I don’t have any experience with home LTE broadband router modems like the one you linked to. However, just to be safe, double check the frequencies to see if they work with our local carriers. Here’s the list for Smart: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_Communications. Check Globe, too.

I agree, use prepaid sims and subscribe to good promos like unlisurf, etc… 🙂 it’s better to be flexible and not be tied to any one plan for years and years 🙂

      Hello GibsonPrado,

Most of the Unlisurf promos are back due to public demand, but it’s not being advertised anymore, and it’s not even on Smart’s website, last time I checked. I only know it’s still available from Smart’s response to questions on their FB page.

Well if our country allowed international telco giants (and i mean real giants that make our telcos here look like bambi against godzilla), then our so called local telcos will be running for their money as the giant competition onslaught will surely kick them where it hurts. Their semi-monopolies would be gravely threatened. Then perhaps the playing field will be wide open. lol.

The problem is, Smart is not publishing any definitive list of the Unlisurf promos they are still accepting, unlisurf is not even on their website anymore. It’s only available because of public demand, I think, and they are trying to wean us off it. Whatever the Smart customer service people say can change any time 🙁 We just use trial & error, I guess….

    Hi Guys,

Just passing by to say that Smart “LTE 995” works for me… 1 month unli internet… though torrent is not that fast, just around 30kbps max.. but browsing speed is fast and streaming speed is fast depending on the time, i can stream a 720p movie without encountering the buffering symbol during 1am in the morning.. my average data usage per month is 30gb..

Great to know! where did you get the LTE 995? is it an actual SIM card? how are you reloading it.
If you are doing 30gb per day then GREAT!

Hi Drew, you just need an LTE-capable Smart SIM. Just buy one of those Smart SIMs that have LTE written on them, chances are your SIM is already LTE-capable if you bought it recently.

You will also need an LTE-capable gadget AND you have to be in an area where there is LTE coverage. Then you just need to subscribe to the LTE promo.

Hello. I’m a Smart Post-Paid subscriber, and I’m still able to register with the UNLISURF service. But when I got my bill, I have a GBRWS worth around P750 on top of the 995 I paid for “unlimited” service. I’m not sure where this came from, and how to go about it, because I assumed that since Smart allowed be to subscribe to UNLISURF, I’d not pay a single cent above 995.

Hi Z, thanks for your comment 🙂

First, I suggest calling Smart customer service to ask about the 750 charge. More often than not, it’s a system error. I myself always get charged an extra P10-100+ a month every month for Facebook VAS even when I still have unused data from my Mega250.

I just call customer service, explain that I should not be charged because I still have unused data, and they process the reversal. This is a system error and all the customer service agents are familiar with it. What happened to your account is probably similar.

It’s just a hassle to call them every month, so sometimes iniipon ko nalang and then one time tawag nalang. They still reverse it kasi mali naman talaga ng system nila.

      Hi Leih,

Check mo muna if there are other factors affecting your internet. Sometimes overall nagbabagal talaga. Check the signal also, etc.. check the settings. Check din kung may nagnanakaw ng wifi mo. During certain times lang ba bumabagal? Did you turn your pocket wifi/ modem router on and off? Napansin ko din after a few hours sometimes my pocket wifi won’t connect or is giving slow internet, so I just turn it off and back on and my internet is fast again, dunno why.

After you have eliminated all that and can reasonably say that the slow internet is because of Smart, call their customer service about it. The reason I asked you to do all those things first is so that when you call them, di ka na paiikot-ikutin ng customer service and you can tell them that you already did this and that.

As for the data throttling issue – I think all the telcos now have some fine print in the contract about some FAIR USE POLICY, which you probably did not read and was not told about.

A lot of people got burned a couple of years ago during the height of the Fair Use Policy issue – they thought they subscribed to unlimited internet but were shocked when their internet started being throttled – but they signed 2-year contracts so they were stuck with it and have to continue paying even if they were not enjoying what they expected. This is one of the reasons why I am very afraid of committing to any long-term telco plan – I only stick with prepaid or to something like Smart’s Freedom Plan where I don’t have any lock-in period and can leave any time I am not happy with the service.

Tiyaga at pasensya talaga pag tumawag sa Smart. You need to have your mobile # ready to type in. Pag mabagal ka nadidisconnect agad yung call. I have this problem when I call about my Smart prepaid numbers (di ko kasi memorize).

Also, try calling late at night or madaling araw para walang kalaban 🙂 Otherwise, hold time is really long or sometimes hindi pumapasok yung call kasi busy daw sila, di kinakaya ng system yung volume ng calls.

Since 2010 when i started using the internet on prepaid smartbro. with UNLISURF 200 (5 Days unlimited 24 hours internet access: websurfing, P2pP, torrent downloads, video livestreaming, etc.). My internet life was then great, no data caps, throttling, speed was ok. But then by 1st quarter of 2015, internet speed was so slow. Until a friend suggested to use SMART LTE Prepaid sim card. and avail of LTE 995 SEND TO 2200 AND load this sim card to an open line HUAWEI B593-22 LTE router. average speed was 12 to 20mbps. Great, no data caps, speed was reliable. I could use the net 24/7 , video livestreaming , surf the net without limit whenever I want. But things changed just recently when I reload my LTE 995 valid for 30 days on Sept. 20, 2015, I could access the net for a limited time only say 4-5 hours per day when I have used 1.5 Gb of data based on my net data counter. I then concluded that unlisurf is still there but with 1.5 data cap per day. My internet connection will resume by 12 am the next day when i have consumed the 1.5 Gb of data for the day. I could not use video streaming sites like you tube, paid subscriptions to HBO Go and iflix. Bull…t my unlimited internet months are so over. Smartbro prepaid internet was great then until the data cap. Unlimited internet was so over starting Sept. 1, 2015. The convenience and affordability of prepaid internet is over. If only there are more alternative Telcos beside the monopolists/cartel of PLDT, Smart, Sun and Globe. National leaders wake up. NTC inutile. Internet in PH is ver expensive. So now I use the net whenever necessary with regular load on per hour basis. Just to download videos with IDM and view them offline not streaming. I opt not to apply postpaid internet plans because they are expensive and lower plans have data caps/allowance per month. Telcos are hungry for profits.

      Hi Internet Addict 🙂

Couldn’t have said it better! Agree with all your points! Our internet is so expensive but the service is so poor compared to international standards.

They keep pushing streaming services like iflix and hooq, but won’t provide unlimited internet for them naman. What’s the point of subscribing to those services if you can’t watch, anyway? For PLDT/Smart, I expected that if someone paid P99 for iflix, then the least they can do is to not cap iflix streaming. They can cap other services like Youtube, but at least let the subscriber watch iflix because they paid for it. Otherwise, why bother paying P99 for iflix access kung di mo naman masusulit. 1.5GB per day, what a joke. That’s only 1-2 movies or 3-4 episodes, assuming you don’t use your internet for anything else.

For Now currently using a 3g wifi unli surf for one month.(Download speed 0.86mbps and Upload 0.39mbps )Good for a moderate consumers but when it comes to streaming ang bagal compared to unlisurf 50/1 day. smart bro unlisurf now have data cap, i think it is 1gb or 1.5gb and comes back around 1am the next day. i called *888 numerous times and none of the agents will admit that they now have a data cap on their unlisurf…it is frustrating, because if they advise their customers of this, they will be careful on what they do with their data, instead of just having no data at all and stops when you’re in the middle of a skype call! what’s the point of unlisurf when it’s not really unlimited?

i just hope they send an sms stating we are nearing our 1gb or 1.5gb data cap!

Totoo. Meron silang cap na 1.5gb sabi samin sa smart. Kakabili lang namin last thursday. Nakakainis kasi akala namin walang cap.

ganon din sa lte prepaid nla, may data cap limit na ren. nagstart lang yan mga middle of september for me. i changed simcard pa, thinking it was my sim card. they won’t admit that they have data cap limit, especially on their fb page. wala daw limit, yeah right!

hey mesh, when you call their *888 tpos yun recording msg nila says their agents are busy, hold on, don’t hang up, because, after a few seconds, it will give you the option to choose to speak in english or tagalog. just hang in there.

yup, as proven, since watching my data counter online, i am never offline, as long as i don’t go over 1.5gb before 1am!

unlisurf for those who doesn’t do torrent downloads! that’s what they’re doing, limiting us from downloading files!

Hi 🙂 Thank you for sharing your experiences.

1.5GB per day is a lot if you only browse. But at present, our internet life is all about streaming and downloading. YouTube, iflix, etc… downloading doesn’t only mean torrents. Ang dami kayang software updates. Also, many of us use Skype or Viber to talk to people abroad. Kulang ang 1.5GB kung ganoon 🙁

Hi Barat Queen , until now I’m still using the smartbro unlisurf ( pocket wifi ) my mother told me that the promo is no longer available so most likely we’re like the remnants of the promo haha but for this month (october 2015) our bill for this month is 3K ?

I usually download Anime , YT video , COC ? did I download something that would make the bill to reach 3K ? or it is because they are now capping the data connection ?

3k? How is that possible? If you are on unlisurf, max bill should be 999 if you don’t use anything else like calls or texts.

Please check your bill. There should be a breakdown of where the 3k charge came from. Baka may error. For me, they kept on billing me Facebook access charges everytime I used the Facebook app on my phone even though I am subscribed to a plan with a data allocation (that is not used up). Hassle lang, every month, I have to call their hotline to ask for the charges to be reversed. Kakainis. Pero narereverse naman. May problem sa system na, it doesn’t detect that I still have remaining MBs and is considering FB access as a separate thing.

Hope you find out what the problem is and have them reverse it.

    Hi!

My unlidata plan on smart will unfortunately be terminated for the next 2 days. I was planning to get another postpaid plan from them amounting the same kaso they don’t offer na daw unlidata plans. I read your post and sounds like this is the best option for me yet kasi I can’t opt for wired connections kasi i’m just renting. Curious lang ako if pwede bang makapagregister s LTE plans nila using a 4G wifi only? I heard mas malakas ang connections LTE. My minimum data consumption is 1.5 gb because I do video calls and video sharing a lot s mga kapatid ko and sa boyfriend ko abroad. I never go offline so it’s really a dilemma for me.. Any suggestions?

Hi Ann, Smart unlisurf will be phased out by Nov. 10, 2015. Papalitan daw ng Surfmax. I haven’t seen any details yet, but here’s hoping unli pa din 🙂 *cross fingers*

      http://smart.com.ph/pages/surfmaxguidelines

Hope they also offer it for prepaid.

As for registering to LTE promos while using a 4G gadget, it can be done, but instead of LTE, you will get 4G signal. I have no experience if this will result to a better connection though. For the meantime, you can try Big Bytes while we are waiting for Surfmax 🙂 or you can still try using unlisurf, hanggang nov. 10 pa naman siya, baka puwede pa yung mga 1 day or 7 days 🙂

Ok but what about regular Smart BUDDY UNLI? example UNLI50….I use this and get the same speeds as the SmartBro Unlisurf50 per day.

Will the regular UNLI be available?

I think this is for Smart Buddy users too. Well, we’ll know that for sure once the Unli promo no longer works. I wonder though what’s the difference between unlisurf and surfmax. I’m thinking this new promo is not unlimited. Internet service in the Philippines is regressing! ☺

wala na tlga RIP unlisurf and RIP internet in the Philippines.

Smart replaced their unlisurf with surfmax which has a lower 800mb limit per day, as oppose to unlisurf recently changed their limit down to 1.5gb.

can’t wait for telstra philippines! 800mb is not enough for 1 day! this is crap!

Smart Unlisurf is (supposedly) ending for good (again!) on June 30, 2016. That’s what the automated SMS tells me.

When I tried to renew my monthly promo, 3 to 4 weeks back, I had to try several stores before it was finally processed. I guess because the full 30 days wasn’t available.

RIP unlimited mobile Wi-Fi? Or will demand bring it back again…?

I need help, I just renewed my unlisurf 995 today but won’t give me 4g service anymore? My current subscription was supposed to end this July 6th but due to Smart Notice about shutting down this Unlisurf, I thought it would be wise to renew my subscription before it ends.. Now my service end date says August 5th next month, that means the remaining days I have left from last month was carried over. Does this mean I have to wait until my last month’s unlisurf to end this July 6th before I could use 4G again? Anyone please, need some enlightenment. Thank you.
