I had been meaning to try Osaka Ohsho for months, but it was only last weekend that we finally, finally, had an early dinner at Osaka Ohsho.
Oh, boy, was it worth the wait!
But funnily enough, for me the best thing I had there was the omelet! It was the fluffiest, softest heaven of an egg, cooked perfectly, with a lightly-flavored but wonderful sauce, served on top of the best-tasting rice I have ever had.
I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start from the beginning.
Osaka Ohsho is a Japanese chain that started in 1969, selling its signature gyoza for 50 yen each in, where else, Osaka.
Last Saturday, the bf and I were walking around SM Megamall, where we saw various posters advertising Osaka Ohsho’s different-flavored gyozas. We saw posters for ham & cheese gyoza and a peanut butter gyoza. Intrigued, I finally convinced him to take a look at the restaurant since we were hungry.
The restaurant is located at the 3rd floor at SM Megamall’s Fashion Hall, right beside Linguini Fini. It’s a small, long space. We found that the table was too small for 2 people and asked if we could transfer to another table (that was supposed to seat 4 people), so that we could eat comfortably.
We ordered the Fuwatoro Tenshin Han Gyoza Set. The set is P650.00 and good for 2. The claim on the menu that it was the fluffiest egg ever convinced me to try it. Good omelets are one of my weaknesses. We also ordered a Crab Cream Croquette (P225.00 for 2 pcs).
While waiting for our order to arrive, I saw that they have a promo where you can get a free miso soup if you post a picture of your meal on Instagram or Facebook. Unfortunately, our Gyoza set already includes miso soup, but it’s good to know for next time!
Our Crab Cream Croquette was the first to arrive.
It’s quite creamy. It was good and tasted slightly of crab, but I didn’t get any big chunks of crab meat like I expected. I was a bit disappointed that there were only 2 pcs and for P225.00, it was kind of expensive. But I figure that it must be hard work to get the crab meat to make the crab croquette, so okay. The good thing about it is that I didn’t get any crab shell. None. This is a win for me because I seem to always get bits of crab shell when I eat other “crab cakes”.
The Fuwatoro Tenshin Han Gyoza arrived. The set includes a big bowl of egg-covered rice, 2 bowls of miso soup, 12 pcs of gyoza, and 2 small bowls of fruit.
Like I said before, the rice was simply amazing! The rice is called koshihikari rice, which means “the light of koshi”. The rice was very white, slightly sticky, sweet and nutty. It goes very well with the omelet and black sesame seeds.
The omelet – what can I say? It was perfect! And I say this as someone who looooooves good omelets and scrambled eggs. The omelet was moist, with a slightly toasted outside and supersoft inside. Yet it was not runny or undercooked! Look at that perfect egg! How do they make it so fluffy?
The sauce was light – lightly sweet and lightly salty, slightly sour, subtle but so perfect! It does not overpower the egg or the rice. This is my favorite out of everything I have eaten this month! I will be back for that omelet rice!
This is the gyoza that is called The World’s No. 1 Gyoza!
The gyoza itself is very, very good. The taste is mild, not too salty, a bit gingery, the meat is very fine, and what I like about it is the vegetable is not cut too small. The vegetable provides a crunch that contrasts to the very fine meat.
The gyoza wrapper is firm (doesn’t break easily), but is also soft and supple. It has that lovely gummy thing going on that I love. The crunchy bits from the pan frying add crunch and flavor.
Osaka Ohsho’s claim of being the world’s #1 gyoza is quite believable! The gyozas are really that good! Look at how moist that thing is!
There are 3 sauces on the table that can be used with the gyoza. These are: the original Osaka Ohsho gyoza sauce, the miso sauce and the chili oil. You can mix them up to get your favorite sauce combination. I’m partial to the miso sauce. It’s sweet and vinegary. It’s actually a bit red and not at all brown like you would expect a “miso” sauce to look like. The sauces are on small containers on the table. Simple. No need to grind up sesame seeds or anything fancy like that.
For drinks, we just asked for the house tea.
Our bill totaled just shy of P1,000. It was P956.00, I think. Not bad considering that it was a pretty good meal for 2 people.
I would love to go back and try out their other dishes!
