PLDT Home Ultera – Is It Worth It?

The past few weeks, I noticed some PLDT Home Ultera signs being put up around our neighborhood. I had no idea what it was, so being curious, I googled it to find out if it was something we may want to subscribe to. Who knows, it could turn out to be a good internet plan. *Hopeful pa*

What is PLDT Ultera?

As I understand it, it’s a home-based LTE internet product from PLDT. Unlike DSL, there are no telephone wires involved when setting it up. It’s similar to Smart Bro, PLDT Canopy or Wimax, except that Ultera uses LTE, which means it provides faster internet.

They provide you with an LTE Wifi Modem and an LTE Wifi Receiver (add P250 to your bill for 36 months + P1,500 one-time fee). Think of this like a home-based pocket wifi.

PLDT Ultera Plans Data Cap

Upon checking their website, I see the plans available and I see that there’s a dreaded data cap. That is a big NO. I would never recommend anything with a data cap, especially for home use. I would only recommend it to someone who is desperate and hopeless of ever getting their own DSL. And even then, I would probably recommend getting a pocket wifi instead with a prepaid SIM.

What is wrong with it?

Pros:

  • Fast internet (supposedly)
  • Easy set up

Cons:

  • Data cap – do not ever get a home internet plan with a data cap because you will just end up angry and frustrated. At least they are transparent about it, but still. Let’s stop patronizing internet offers with data caps and demand true unlimited internet
  • Only 5 users can connect to the LTE Wifi Modem / Receiver! Please, most households have more than 5 wifi gadgets. First, count each family member’s wifi-capable cellphone, then their tablets, then laptops and computers. And what if you have visitors who brought their own wifi-capable phones, tablets and laptops? What if you have other wifi-capable devices like Smart TVs?
  • 36 months lock-in period

The Data Cap

The biggest problem for me is the data cap. I really want to like this plan, I really do. Even if we have DSL at home, I always want to know about alternatives in case we run into a problem, and I know some people who for some reason or other, can’t get a DSL, so I’m always happy to let them know if I find some good alternative for them.

I was actually so excited about this new Ultera plan, thinking that maybe PLDT was offering something good. But that data cap! 1GB per day for a household? Are you kidding?! That is so not enough, not even for one person if you do a bit of streaming! Even the 2.3GB per day is a joke for a household. Just a couple hours of Youtube, Spotify, 9GAG and that 2.3GB can be easily consumed. That’s not even including torrents!

Even totally legit applications use a lot of data, too – Flickr, Dropbox, OneDrive, Evernote, Instagram, G+ Photos… you know, by default, the pictures you take on your phone sync to your cloud accounts, right? That uses data.

What about all those Windows Updates? They are sometimes several GBs big.

Some games are also data-intensive.

So imagine 2-3 people using the internet at home – that 1GB data cap for the Plan 999 will be used up in 30 minutes. What if your kid intentionally or accidentally used up your plan’s 30GB allocation for the month? What are you going to do when you need to go online? You can still go online, at the adjusted speed of 256 kbps. Good luck with your choppy Youtube. What is this? Dial-up?

Also, what if by some miracle, Netflix or Hulu becomes legitimately available in the Philippines? Your internet allocation will be capped halfway through your House of Cards marathon!

Getting a home internet plan with a data cap, and such an unbelievably low one at that, is just setting yourself up for rage later on.

Second, the speed. I thought this was using LTE? Why is the speed only from 3 – 10 Mbps? I thought LTE speed was up to 42 Mbps? Mobile internet LTE in some areas easily reach 25+ Mbps. Why is this only at 3 – 10 Mpbs?

CONCLUSION:

Save yourself. Save your sanity. Don’t go postal. Just don’t get this plan.

If they didn’t have a data cap, I would totally recommend it.

Sure, the 1GB per day cap is a bit higher than Globe’s 800MB, but Globe’s mobile internet was marketed as a personal mobile internet access while on the go and not as a replacement for home broadband. PLDT’s Ultera is intended as a home broadband alternative to DSL. 1GB / day is unacceptable.

Depending on signal strength, I think you’ll be much better off getting a pocket wifi with a prepaid SIM instead – at least there is no lock-in period, and it’s easy to switch networks whenever service goes bad, and there are tips & tricks to get around the capping.

This data capping or tiered data trend is very disturbing. First it’s data capping mobile internet… and once we get used to data capping, what’s next? Are they going to start capping DSL and other internet services?

Let’s vote with our wallets and let these ISPs know that we don’t want metered internet and data capping and throttling, but instead want unlimited internet the way we originally understood it to be, before all the FUPs.

      Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your comment! I haven’t heard of tricks to bypass Ultera’s capping yet, but I’ve read that bypassing Globe’s 800mb limit involves using a proxy and changing a few things in the settings. So maybe it’s similar.

I was able to post the Gosakto tricks because they are just simply using a combination of legitimate offers, which are all valid. However, I am not sure if I will get in trouble for posting instructions on how to bypass the data caps.

There are ways to bypass it. If there’s a will, there’s a way 🙂 Just google it and you will find instructions in other sites.

But the best way is, as much as possible, just stop supporting data offers that have data caps and ask companies to bring back “real” unlimited offers.

Hi! I have been an Ultera subscriber for just under one month and i just received an email saying that we are at 90% capacity and they’re now selling us boosters at 1GB, 4GB and 10GB. I dont know what these are and if they actually work, would you know anything about that? Also, since your Ultera is over a year and a half old, would you know if PLDT has done anything to improve their services or changed their capping methods?

Thanks to your post! I just got a call from a PLDT representative offering me this ULTERA plan in place of my canopy. She said I don’t need to pay anything. I just need to sign up for a new subscription. I asked if there is a data cap and I was told that there is and that there is a lock in period. I told the rep to call again as I was still thinking about it. Good thing I’ve read your post and the comments of ULTERA subscribers. I will now refuse if the rep calls again.

Hi, I know pldt ultera’s data cap is such a pain in the butt. We have this installed in our home. I can’t even play Dota2. Regarding the 3-10 mbps speed, the probable reason why it can’t get up to the LTE speed is because there is no proximate 4G tower near your place. Our place only have 3G towers of Smart that’s why we only get above 3Mbps. I know another non-LTE connection from Globe which is a bundle at minimum 1299 with 2Mbps speed. The good thing with this is it has no data cap and I’ve used it to play Dota2. It’s much enjoyable than the 3Mbps LTE from PLDT. However, I don’t think Globe is still offering it now. That bundle was 2 years ago and I visited Globe’s website and they have removed uncapped plans except for the costly platinum and wired connections.

Hi Rayrenz! Thank you for commenting 🙂

The 3Mbps is the limit set by PLDT for the Ultera Plan 999.

Capped plans just plain suck, right? 🙂 No matter how fast the internet is, having it capped takes all the goodness out of it.

I am really desperate to have an internet at home and my biggest problem is the cap. size data that is flying all over the post. And as act of being desperate I am about to go to ULTERA but with a big doubt in my heart. This article help me decide.

Hi, KaiserGab 🙂 I’m so glad the article helped you. It really depends on your usage. If you are not a heavy user, then maybe the Ultera is okay. Normal facebook, instagram, email, web surfing – they won’t eat up your data allocation even if you do it the whole day and you will probably be fine.

Just don’t expect that you will be able to do a lot of downloading and Youtbe / video watching on the Ultera.

I’m just sad that you have no other choice, napipilitan ka ng kagatin eto 🙁 at least you have a good idea of what you are committing to, and I really hope that PLDT improves this in the future.

Hi we are same here. So this is the only option that I have. Considering the price and speed and most of all the data capping, i’m so disappointed. But i have no choice left so I went to the PLDT BUSINESS CENTER and then told them I want to MIGRATE to ULTERA but UPGRADE my SPEED to 5mbps considering that 1 gb data cap. So stupid data allocation. It will greatly affects my ONLINE JOB.
So in short a 1GB DATA CAP IS NOT ENOUGH FOR ME. Going back to the PLDT BUSINESS CENTER. Staff is OK especially handling to BWESIT CUSTOMERS they handling everyday. I clarified that I WONT accept the ULTERA 999 PLAN MIGRATION. Yes I won pay anything but the capping is not worth it. So she told me that I need to CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT but the consequences is that I HAVE TO PAY THAT 300 DEVICE FEE FOR 36 MONTHS. Imagine that 36 months x 300 = 10000. Whoow! and wait its bundled with 1GB DATA ONLY (for plan 999)! So I decided to switch to 5MPBS WITH 1.65 DATA CAP. Then she suggested processed my papers, and contact the SMART CENTER MANILA to waived my case. After 1 month, the call center girl informed me that I AM APPROVED WITH THE MIGRATION AT A HIGHER SPEED. MORAL LESSON: PLEASE AVOID THESE COMPANY IF YOU OTHER CHOICES.! P.S. Glad we only have 3 users at home. Darn it! I’M HOPING THAT 1 DAY THEY MET THEIR MATCH. THIS CONGLOMERATE / MONOPOLY REALLY SUCKS.

I turned down their offer na palitan Smartbro Canopy into PLDT Ultera kahit tumatawag sila palagi saying na ipe phase out na ang canopy by 2016 daw???

Tapos nung nag ask kami to disconnect our wife they ask us to pay termination dahil daw new contract daw uli I to. . Try mo muna to talk to PLDT’s customer service, bring lots of patience and explain what happened. Just continue to be civil and don’t lose your cool. Don’t be adversarial to hopefully get better results. Good luck!

I record the conversations whenever the rep calls me.. Grr.. lately one of my worst encounters is that I can’t open our WP ADMIN SITE. It is a HTTPS site. The domain is kinda like this, (https://domain.com.wp-admin) I can only open it using TOR BROWSER. DAMN IT. I thought the issue was on my PC. I did everything, cleaning and cleaning all the adwares, cache of browsers, internet options, turning on SSL 2.0 and etc. So i decided to call the PLDT customer service, I expect she would instruct me to do the basic ( clearing browsers cache and reset the settings). But to no avail ,nothing works. Hindi ko parin ma.open and wp admin namin. So she called the TECH SUPPORT AND HANG FOR A FEW MOMENTS. Then she came back and they will fix the issue and assuring me tomorrow I could open the site. All the HTTPS SITES, even bpiexpressonline.com I can’t open it. It could load using TOR BROWSER. The next day, I could now continue to my work. Damn it. I wasn’t able to work properly for 1 whole day.!!!

I was subscribed to SmartBro Before and my experience using the internet was horrible. I was just waiting for my contract to end so that i’ll switch to a faster internet service. Then there was this 1 rep who came personally and offered this ULTERA. I was shocked because i didnt request for it. He said that SmartBro is phase out and being upgraded to ULTERA. I was ambivalent to get the offer because of my experience to them. The guy said its much faster than SmartBro. Geez, I was really gullible so i agreed to upgrade it and for that my contract extends another 3 yrs.
Using ultera for the first time was so smooth. But as day goes by its even worst. Now…my concern is i want to look for another provider but the problem is i still have my contract with them. Will get daft if i abandoned ULTERA?

So sorry to hear about your experience. Were you not told about the data cap when you converted your plan? If you have a 3-year plan with them, I think they will go after you if you stop paying it. Here in the Philippines, when commiting to any long-term mobile/internet/or any other plan, you must really do your research if the plan really lives up to expectations, unfortunately 🙁

Make sure na malinis yung pag-alis mo sa service to avoid future headaches like possible lawsuits or collection agents or being blacklisted. You can also try asking the NTC for advice. It’s good to always research before making a commitment like that, hahaha 🙂 Good thing you did! Whenever I get a sales pitch that tells me to get it now/today or else, kinakabahan ako. I immediately think there must be something wrong with it – why won’t they let customers research about the product first? If the product is really good, people will come back to buy it.

As a customer, I don’t like being manipulated by bad sales tactics. Naiinis lang ako. There’s a big condo nearby our house. When it was being built, last few units left daw, hanggang ngayon, 5 yrs na tapos, last few units left pa din. They just lose credibility with me. Can’t decide if it’s funny or sad.

Directly 300 meters underneath my there is the antenna span from SMART ( so Globe offers don t come into question)
so there is only the ultra home offer from PLDT left. 256 kb/ s downstream is guaranteed , after used the 1 GB, momentary I use a SMART Bro stick, with which the speed is 20-80 kb/s downstream.
so can someone make my a proposal. thanks already

I almost got tied up in a bloody 36-month contract! Here’s what happened…hubby happens to be walking around the town market to buy a couple ingredients I need for our lunch menu. That when a PLDT guy approached him and handed over him a well presented flyer…with all the advertisement and stuff like super fast pldt ultera blah, blah. Hubby was so into getting the connection. Only one problem, we are, in a few weeks time, about to move out of our then current home. But he still did the application even though I said I’ll think about it(the man is the boss of me if he can!). After a week hubby got a call from Sales guy approving the application and waited for hubby’s go signal for installation date. But then when he said we are moving out of current premise, the sales guy said, you can just file for a new application. Now, we are already almost a month in our new home, hubby is now persuading me to re-apply for the Ultera. Luckily, I came across this blog so, I think I have some ammo to fire when hubby opens up a convo with me about the PLDT ultera! Thanks for this eye opening blog! Cheers!!!

Nako salamat po sa article nato. My tumawag kc sakin from smart stating na pinapa migrate na ako to PLDT ultera since ma pupull-out ndaw yung conection anyway daw kc same speed at billing daw rin. pero yung nakaka ilang is yung 36 months AT DI PA AKO SURE KUNG MAGANDA BA TLGA YUNG SERVICE kasi what I’ve heard from my friends PLDT has the dumbest internet service provider. At yung family we’re planning to reside to cebu and I thought what if there’s that time or what if in that time na nag reside kmi in somewhere else in cebu na area e hindi kumonekt yung internet at 36 months pa naman nka lock-in di naman pwedeng nagbabayad ka pero walang ka nagagamit na internet, parang bobo kalang dba. Yung nakaka frustrate din e, kc years lock in ako sa smart my bro and 1 year nalang yung remaining terms ko, maganda nman yung internet sa WIMAX kasi okay sya at unlimited walang capping na sinasabi or yung mga na mention dito sa limitaytions sa internet, yung problem lang is pag DIRAW AKO MAG MIGRATE, I WILL END UP PAYING my 1 year terms sa contract but without sa internet service. Hello Jancris, thanks for your comment. When the time comes that wimax/canopy service stops, you can ask them to stop your holding period nalang. Dapat may option to stop the holding period when their service stops.

Check your contract with them. Wala naman sigurong nakasabi na you have to continue to pay even if they don’t provide service. Ako nga, nakakakuha pa ng pro-rated rebate if their internet goes down for a few days. They really cannot force you to pay if they are not providing the service you paid for. But don’t just stop paying. Kausapin mo sila ng maayos para walang gulo and your record remains clean with them.

Also, since you are moving to Cebu, that is a valid reason to give them for why you don’t want to enter into another contract with a long holding period.

No choice naman eh… mapa smart pldt or Globe… bulok ang serbisyo… Globe wimax subscriber ako. July 1 nawalan na kami ng signal(pagkatapos magbayad) for migration daw kami sa LTE… since july 1 up to now wala pang nag papakitang Globe technician to upgrade our wimax kesyo hindi raw kami ma contact out of 3 contact numbers na binigay naman plus hindi raw ma locate yung area.. at kung ano ano pang mga dahilan.

Hi Basilio, thanks for visiting 🙂 Ganyan talaga, minsan kailangan tiyaga mag-follow up, unfortunately 🙁 Have you tried to contact Globe through Twitter & FB? Sometimes sa subcontractor assigned yung pagpunta sa inyo, and meron talagang iba dyan hindi professional magtrabaho, although I think majority naman honest & hardworking. Hope your internet gets fixed soon.

I was angry at first on my mom, cause she rejected the offer of Pldt ultera i was like “Mom! It’s 3mbps! why did you reject that kind of offer!” Then after that i’ve tried to went to the nearest pldt outlet in our town. Later on I’ve found out that it was like a consumable load with a sim card on the modem and the satellite antenna, and after that the teller recommended me on not migrating to ultera. Now i’m still enjoying the un-“limited” internet of smart bro wimax, though it slow down sometimes. I’m still lucky that my mom rejected the offer 🙂

this is the worst plan i had, i regret na pinalitan ko yung canopy ko, almost every month nawawala yung signal sa bahay and just this month 9 days na walang signal. tawag ako ng tawag sa customer service nila wala naman action na nagyayari. intitled ako for 2 years contract paano kung gusto ko nang istop, magbabayad pa rin ba ako ng monthly bills ko every month kahit na hindi na ako gumagamit..? any advice?
    thanks 🙂

Hi agnis, sorry to hear about your experience with Ultera 🙁 For the times when there was no signal, I think you can request for a rebate. When our DSL is down for several days and it’s a PLDT issue, I usually call & request them to deduct that time from our bill. It’s pro-rated.

As for your contract, I don’t know how to terminate it without incurring the termination fee. Maybe someone else who has already done so successfully can share their experience.

Hi! This morning a customer service representative called me. They offering me to upgrade to ultera because they said that wimax (Im using indoor so no cap limit 🙂 ) will soon be phase out. I already said no because of the articles I’ve read regarding the capping of that thrash service plan but they insist. In the end I said that I will be upgrading mine in due time or maybe when wimax is totally phase out.
To others using wimax, please don’t upgrade (I think this is the right term — downgrade?) your plan. Let’s just enjoy our current plan while It last and when the time comes that wimax are totally gone, lets switch for better ISP not that ULTERA as much as we can.

My worst nightmare using canopy internet connection from being pirated from smart bro. Fuck pldt lte utera. I have applied pldty ultera @ 10mbps around 1799 per month. Ant its not worth it. I am always having poor internet to no connection for seven months now. I have complained to their branch office. They make the report. And call center agents calling are always useless. Tried to call *1888 and getting a connection is very hard. They tried to be good but not good enough.
My smart bro @ 2mbps has no problem with internet connection using skype or any other application. Can even use SKYPE right not.
I send emails to pldt customer care. Before I am getting reply. Until they stop anwering my emails.

I wish I can change to other networks if not for the fucking pldt ultera lte contract.

It’s been 4 months now since we switched from Canopy to this Ultera plan. Sadly, I could share the same sentiments with the people who bent out their frustration in the comment box. Super slow, you can only watch HD videos on YouTube for minutes only and when you reach your cap, even Facebook fails to load up. Minsan nawawalan pa ng connection. The canopy was better though it is slower compared to their new plan, it has an unlimited internet connection naman which goes really fast at night. Sana I found out about this article about the Ultera plan before my parents decided to switch to this.

Yung canopy my husband can watch movie online the whole night.

      Hi bonkjonks 🙂

Wow, so sad for your experience. Although ideally dapat mabilis at walang data cap. Seems like the telcos are pushing for the data caps. I heard that Globe has started putting data caps on DSL! And even PLDT has started offering a new DSL plan with data cap.

I like watching Youtube videos and I watch iflix, among other data heavy activities.

Di ba talaga puwede magka DSL line sa lugar ninyo? Unfortunately parang DSL or Fibr nalang ang choice for no data cap 🙁

I had a friend here in the province but is not here anymore and was using a Pocket WIFI from Smart and was loading the 5 day plans for P250 or P300 but the cap for these are 3gb i think for UnliSurf.

I really need at least 20-30gb per month or 1gb per day. Does anyone know the best way to do this on a pocket wifi?

I can just buy the smart bro load cards even if i have to every day for P50. But i don’t know the data cap on those cards i can’t find out what the limits are.

🙁 just came across with this blog while looking for some info on how to know if an PLDT Ultera install crews who used Iphone is connected or secretly viewing my Dell Laptop with Windows 8 OS… Since 2007, I had Globe DSL with landline. Then December 2013, we transferred to our new home. Around February 2014, I had SmartBro installed, since my experience with Smart Mobile postpaid UnliSurf is really good. Pero after about 2 months, I noticed that the internet connection wasn’t stable, it was On/Off… I kept paying the monthly bills though, but stopped because after 4 months the internet connection became slower to no connections at all. Last August 1, I asked my son to apply for PLDT Ultera because I really need internet connection due to work, because I already terminated my smart postpaid when it matured. The sales agent promised connection after 3 days, or the longest waiting was a week. Finally PLDT Home Ultera was installed last August 11. After the installation, I was able to used internet for an hor, then the connection was gone. So I bothered my son through text and call to call the sales agent/customer service about it. Also, i noticed that they are not giving a copy of the installation docs my brother signed, also unlike globe, they used my laptop to install. They didn’t have their own gadget/laptop for the installation. About past 5pm, the crew came back and they were upset because when they went up, nagdadabog yong nagiinstall sa bubong namin. So i told the guy using my laptop to please tell the guy up to be careful, baka mabutas ang bubong ko. Also the guy who installed, warned me na baka baklasin na lang nila at di na kami makakabitan. (If only I read this before – sana nga pinatanggal ko na lang). Sabi ko sa guy, nong bumalik sila “naku baka matulad yan sa Smart Bro ha… walang connection” Then sabi nong nag-iinstall, pangtatlo ako sa ininstallan nila na nagreklamo at binalikan nila…. Sabi nila, PLDT daw ang may problem. Sabi ko, wala akong paki dyan, kasi i cinsider them PLDT personnel although I know contractor lang sila. That night I was able to use the internet, but the following day August 12 whole day no internet. My wifi icon says “internet access” but when you try to open a site, no internet access. I didn’t bother to ask my son to call the costumer service again. But around 11:30am of August 13, the crew went back. They said they will check the connection. I showed no enthusiasm and I told them all my concerns. Sabi ko bakit wala kayong sariling gadget. So while they were isntalling, I was beside him, pero napansin ko di sya derederechong pumapasok. Sabi ko bakit di ko mapalitan ang Wifi Name and password, it’s the same homebro, homebro… Binigyan nila ako ng 192.168.22.1, pero napansin ko 192,168.15.1 pero pag clinick ko, sabi ng laptop ko ang connection ko daw ay not private and the link may steal my password, credit card, information… Also, biglang nagpalit nag nag-iinstall at dala dala nya ang Iphone. So medyo may doubt sakin ngayon, I don’t want to go online kc baka nong tumatayo ako (kc I was cooking) he connected his iphone to my PC… Worried talaga ako, kc nga habang nag-iinstall sila at nakatingin ako, di nila tinutuloy. Eh nong ma-establish na ang Wifi connection, baka they connected my Dell Laptop 64bit OS to his Iphone…. 🙁 🙁 kc I told them gusto ko palitan wifi name and password, di nila ibinigay paraan. Hayy naku sana nabasa ko to before August 11…. :((

Hi, can anyone help lorie and answer her questions?

I don’t have Ultera, so I don’t know the specifics, but I did notice na consistent sila in not giving customers the means to do things like change the wifi name & password, etc… buti nalang may konting alam ako sa tech and marunong ako mag google. Pero the part where they treat you like an idiot and don’t explain things nor give you the settings you need – I don’t know if it’s part of their SOP or what, but they are consistent about it.

You can call PLDT customer service to complain about the contractors. Good luck in getting a nice PLDT customer service agent 🙂 you will need luck & patience. When you start complaining, there is a tendency for PLDT agents to “accidentally drop” calls kasi.

i recently subscribed to ultera @ the basic plan. i am aware going in re the data capping a day. i found out that after connnecting 4 devices at once ( 3 smart phones and my computer) that my data cap was gone in abt 2 hours coz of the updates my devices needed to do. i can’t really complain, but really, 1gb for a day for a youtube hogging, social media hungry, streaming generation.

i do hope that PLDT has something in the pipeline on upgrading their infrastrusture. i do not need ultra fast speeds, just consistent internet svc and workable daily and monthly data allowance. otherwise, i’m going to pay thru the nose for shitty svc for 36 months.

    Hi Ms. Barat Queen.

Thank you for this article. I hope maraming makakabasa nito before “upgrading” to PLDT Ultera.

SmartBro Canopy subscriber din ako. My contract just expired this August. I too got a call from their sales rep telling me I need to switch to PLDT Ultera. Very limited yung information na binigay nila and since I was at work I told them to give me a callback at 5pm so I’ll have time to read more about the said “upgrade”. Thank God the call didn’t came.lol

I did some research and came across your blog and read all the comments here. I feel sorry for everybody who have switched to PLDT Ultera and all the internet problems they are currently experiencing. I’d like to help in my own way and hopefully people doing some research will come across your blog and get to read this. So here goes…

    Current SmartBro Canopy user:
    – if a customer rep will call you and he or she will most likely use words like “Phase out na po kasi ang SmartBro Canopy”, what they meant was they will no longer accept new subscribers to get the SmartBro Canopy plan.
    – as far as what the customer rep told me during my call, walang data capping sa current SmartBro Canopy plan.
    – if they are persistent in calling you to switch just tell them politely to note in your account not to call you again regarding their new offer. Makulit din kasi sila sa akin dati about getting the new Wave tablet until I told the last sales rep who called me not bother me again about the offer.

I have an online job and data capping just doesn’t make sense to me lalong-lalo na 9 hours naka online. Although SmartBro Canopy (plan 999) may not be the best it is decent enough and I get to work okay.

Hope this helps. God bless everyone. 🙂

Nice info, just when our branch manager asked me advice about getting this PLDT ulterra. They are still using Smart Bro canopy, and up until now as she said, theres still no connection because their Tower in morong is still under maintenance, and then they got this offer. I think sinasadya na talaga ng Smart. Here in our office in Pililla Rizal, we still use the Smart Bro canopy thingy, but the billing have shifted to PLDT Home Bro. There was a time like last year or so that i keep calling/complaining them about the very slow connection of their service. Good thing is up until now, seems ok, even at 2mbs only, and its a residential account, though we are using it for Office use with 12 computers. While browsing through the comments, now i’m a bit worried that there will come a time we will get a call from PLDT about this phasing out of canopies. We are using 2 ISPs, one is PLDT Home Bro which i’m using for our network. and the other ISP from a cable company here in Rizal, both doesn’t have caps. The only problem i’m getting now is sometimes, well most of the times, they say youtube is slow, but damn they’re supposed to be in the office working, and i’m a freaking heavy downloader. Well i’m actually the only “IT go to guy” here.

Thanx for this review/info on Ulterra. now i’m gonna bookmark this site.

      Hi Celine,

Thank you for your comment! 🙂 I asked around and it seems that PLDT DSL is the better choice talaga. At this point in time, walang perfect na ISP dito sa Pilipinas, lahat may kanya kanyang problema 🙁 if you are satisfied naman with your Smart Bro pocket wifi, just continue it nalang. I think puwede naman mag continue ng plan kahit tapos na yung lock-in period. You should be getting the same service and pay the same amount, except the only difference is, you can leave any time you want if the service goes bad. I am sure they will ask you to “renew” your contract for another 2 years but there is no need to do that if you want to continue with the service. Sometimes they will offer you a discount or some freebies to encourage you to renew your contract. But if you are not interested in the freebies, there’s no need to renew.

If you want to look for another internet service, ask your neighbors what internet they are using and if they are satisfied with it. Good luck!

Also, I have a post that explains Mbps etc… 🙂

But i found out na halos lahat dito e nakasun.at yun din ang sabi nung tindera sakin. So maybe by december, ill switch to sun broadband nlang. By the way, yung mga ibang bahay dito cignal tv yung gamit. May wifi sign kasi sa logo nila kaya curious ako. Unfortunately I thought it was expensive because our legacy Destiny cable is only around P500 with more channels pa (91). Sa Cignal ang konti lang ng channels for the price, and puro local free channels pa halos. I don’t think they have internet service, but I could be wrong.

I just recently got into the pisonet game and so far all of my consoles are not online, yet. But if inevitability has it, I can see the business going down this route, eventually. I’ve heard of ULTERA before. It’s actually ubiquitous in this line of business. They are marketing it everywhere. The shops where I’m getting all my parts sell it. All the computer technicians I know recommend it. They are even selling it thru facebook and maybe thru other social media as well. So for a good while I was curious and even entertained the idea of deploying ultera to connect my over a hundred boxes, and growing, all over. I had such high hopes. Fantasizing about it, I can’t help but smile. Then YOU had to post this blog, blogger! jk. But sarcasm aside, I should thank you for what would have been a disaster and my eventual demise.
Now, I’m not so much of a techie. But I’m quite observant. And if optimism matters, I say there’s always a solution for every problem. Remember the days of old when internet going online means using a modem? This is not for the faint of heart, just mostly for the likes of me stuck in this very same predicament.
So, how about if on one location, a central office perhaps preferably located near pldt to guarantee fast service in case of a breakdown, I subscribe for the fastest fibr or dsl connection available, plus maybe a few other ISPs as fail over. Then host this signal to all my pisonet sites via pldt wired/normal telephone line and modem? PLDT lines nowadays cost at around 300/mo. Provide 2 lines for each connection or 600 php per mo. per setup. One in the host area and the other at the end of the line where the pisonet boxes (minimum of 10 boxes per location for economic reason) are located. Will this trick work and guarantee a descent connection all the time?
    Just my 1 cent.

      Hi erickson,

Thank you for sharing 🙂 I don’t have any experience with pisonet and I don’t think I know enough to advise you on your proposed setup. But if there’s a will, there’s a way 🙂

As for main internet, yes, Fibr or DSL is the way to go. If I understand correctly, you want to create your own subnetwork or be your own mini ISP for your pisonet units. I am not that big of a techie, but I get where you are going with this 🙂

There are some local message boards (tipidpc, pinoyexchange, etc) where internet shop owners frequent, just google them. Ask around if someone has already done this sort of set up, make sure it’s all legal and stuff 🙂

      Good luck! 🙂

I was to wash my frustration on my tattoo globe 999 average speed download speed is less than 100mbps, before the cap and 25kbps, yes slower than telephone connection of the past, with this PLDT Ultera, i just wait for Globe dsl in baler to operate. pldt dsl is offered to businesses only.

Just a few minutes ago somebody from PLDT telling me that my smart bro canopy is due for migration to Ultera and even told them to come back tomorrow Sat. 11/06/15. Curious enough I googled about it and find this blog very timely. Thank you. Have you ever posted in the past about SkyCable Super Saver Plan 1299? Internet 2Mbps and Cable bundle.

Thank you for sharing this. I was tangled between getting pocket wifi and upgrading my (useless) SmartBro (ken) ’til I checked on the pros and cons and it seems the disadvantages were way ahead in our current plans of upgrading to Ultera. We rely on downloads for our daughter’s offline Youtube Elmo’s world videos and I agree that 1GB/day cap is an insult considering the cost of the service.

I searched left and right for a very useful info and glad I took a peep at your blog. This was very helpful … and it has been emotional.

Hello Zyra, thank you very much for your kind words!

Those are exactly the reasons why I am very afraid of getting a postpaid plan that has a lock in period. At least with prepaid, or with a postpaid plan without a lock in period (or a very short one like 3 months), you can leave any time you are not satisfied with the service.

Hello maybel 🙂 I think most people in the Philippines have this problem. Unfortunately, we only have 2 mainstream choices for internet – Globe or Smart/PLDT (and their sister companies). And, also, unfortunately, they have started capping mobile data and even DSL (Globe).

The best internet available, I have heard, is PLDT Fibr. But it is not yet widely available. It is not even available in my neck of Manila. It is the best bang for the buck – one person I know pays P3,500 monthly and now gets 50 Mbps speeds, and so far, the internet is not capped.

If you can afford PLDT Fibr and if it is available in your area, that would be my recommendation.

Next best thing is PLDT DSL. Lately, it’s been acting weird. Slow and seems throttled during peak hours. But at least it is still uncapped, and the cheapest plan without phone line is 999, and is more widely available than Fibr.

Using mobile internet (not wired) for your home use is just not advisable, but many people still use it because they don’t have any other options – be prepared for slow internet and major frustration and data capping.

Good luck and hope you find the best option for you! 🙂

Hello Amado, thank you for your comment! If only they made their data allocation more reasonable, or go back to unlimited, it would have been acceptable. I think, for most people, slower but unlimited internet is preferable to fast but with a very low data cap.

Imagine 1GB / day allocation for a household. Sometimes games and other software need to download files, patches and upgrade files, sometimes these files can be several GB – they will never finish downloading because they will always be cut off at 1GB!

    Hello,

Just like erickson E., I just got into the pisonet business though I only have 3 units and one PC as of now. I can’t go full blast because I still don’t have my internet connection. I applied at PLDT for a DSL connection but sadly, I was told there are no available lines in our area. I still have to wait for their expansion (which is tentatively set during the first Q of next year – that would be too long!), or wait if there’s an existing PLDT subscriber whose line is cut. The instruction is I have to report to them the name of the subscriber and I will be the top priority in case the line will be disconnected. As another option, they recommended Ultera. I was about to go with it even if I know it has a data cap until I read this blog. This is certainly helpful.

While still in the process of applying for a PLDT line, I also applied with Globe. I presently have a pocket mobile wife postpaid line with Globe, which will expire in May 2016. I paid P999 per month for the line. I initially planned to have this upgraded into a DSL line for my pisonet but sadly again, this is not possible. I will have to apply for another line. After credit line checking and location scanning, I was told the only available line in our area is WIMAX with only 1mbps speed but no data cap at P999 per month. Is this plan okay? I mean with only 1mbps speed, I don’t know if this can handle the 4 computers I presently have. And I will be adding more soon. Presently, my clients still use the pisonet but for games only that don’t need internet connection. If there are clients who want to go online, I let them use the PC which luckily can accept the mobile wifi connection. The speed is okay though there are times it gets slow. When I applied for the pocket mobile wifi, I was told its unlimited and no data cap but now, I regularly get messages telling me my connection has slowed down because my data usage has gone big. Now I don’t know which network to go — Ultera at 5mbps or more but with data cap or WIMAX with only 1mbps but no data cap. Can you help me decide? I badly needed an internet connection.

    Thanks

Hello 🙂 thank you for your comment! It really depends on what you need it for. If you don’t need to download big files (just web surfing) and want fast internet, go with the faster one but capped. If you need to download big files, do torrents, streaming, watch a lot of youtube, then a slower but unlimited connection is better.

If youtube streaming is always buffering because of slow internet, just google some ways to prevent that, so you can wait for the whole video to finish loading before watching.

Thaaaank you! I just completed my online application and thanks to this site, I think I’d better cancel that application. You are right, I might as well go prepaid LTE. In case service sucks, it would be easy to change. 1Gb a day is just terrible for home use. It said in their site 30GB cap but I think they’ve left out the 1Gb a day term.

    Hello,
The only turn off with ULTERA is the 36months contract unless they can guarantee a consistent speed for the 36-months or we can terminate after proving that their service stinks and not pay any termination fee which is equivalent to the remaining months… really telco, are we that stupid to pay you the remaining months, and terminate… or upgrade if there is a new/better technology.
    – Another turn-off is we pay for the modem for Php300/mo for 36mos and written in their application it is stated, I quote “The warranty shall be limited to (7) days from date of installation. I will be liable for the cost of replacing or repairing the modem after the warranty period” – this is really BS… really??.. 7-days warranty??? kaya nga rent to own kasi if it bogs down it should be replaced by them FREE Of Charge…
    – The speed, if true at 10mbps or 80% sounds ok. Why don’t they charge on the total average bandwidth used, meaning Php1999 if you get 10mbps consistent for 30days. If we were only able to use 8mbps total (80%) so you just pay (1999×80%=)1,599,20 – fair usage(?) he he he…. similar to mobile call, which is charged on per pulse or 6 secs., so if your call is 60 secs(1min), that’s 6-pesos but i you only use 30secs(1/2min), then you pay 3pesos… INUTIL ang NTC pala… pro-telco… ha ha ha…
    – Capping or of data allocation 70GB is also fine coz my kids during school days are limited or no gadget at all specially before and during exams and at 9:30pm, they are all in bed. Besides there are better things to do on weekends for kids instead of gadgets, youtube, online games etc… our house rule, no gadgets on the dining table… modesty aside, my kids has their own laptop, my college uses mac, junior high has toshiba gaming (i7), little girl has ipad and laptop, they have iphone6s, iphone5s, note4/5, and they are subscribed to spofity, i use lenovo yoga3 ultrabook etc… we have smart TVs as well…
    – Limiting to 5 concurrent user is also a negative, so i put in place another router and connect pldt’s existing router…
    Question;
    1. 70GB cap – do i divide this on a per daily basis (70/30=2.3gb/day) or as long i don’t go beyond 70gb until the end of the month it doesn’t matter if I use 5gb today and 1gb tom

Anyway, I need an honest to goodness feedback pls. SPEED is my major concern pls… coz I work at home most of the time…

Walang fiber sa area namin at copper pa din daw sabi ni pldt, so they recommended ULTERA… they said DSL but i still have to pay for the voice which is 691.50 additional on top of the 3,000 pesos for 8mbps plan. Solved na ako sa 3,000 but to force the voice at 691.50, that’s hi-way robbery already… Who wants a voice line when there are cellphones already unless deadspot house mo he he he… i would have subscribed to fiber if it were available even with Globe LTE, it is only 2mbps when they tested here…

    Thank you so much….

      Hi Diego,

Thank you for your comment 🙂 Anyway, based on the comments I have read here, it seems that the DSL is definitely the better deal compared to Ultera. Paying the extra P600+ for the landline is the price to pay for a DSL, I guess, but it is still the better option than going for Ultera. When you get as frustrated with Ultera as the other users here, you might wish you had chosen to pay the extra P600+ instead just to get decent internet.

Also, everyone in your family has their own internet gadget, and you even have Smart TVs. Trust me, 70GB per month is not enough. Software updates palang, ubos na yan – Windows updates, app updates, etc… And your kids are using Spotify, too, right? And YouTube? They might need to watch/download files for their projects or homework, too. 70GB is really not a lot, especially not with so many people using the internet.

Anyway, if you have to pay the P600+ for the landline, might as well find a use for it nalang to make the best of the situation. There are still instances when using a landline is better than using a cellphone – most food delivery places still use a landline, and most customer service numbers still also use a landline, and if landlines are not included in your cellphone plan, using a landline to call customer service will save you a lot of money. You can also try to get the next lower DSL plan to keep the overall PLDT bill lower.

Also, if I remember correctly, our lock-in period for DSL was 2 years, while Ultera’s is 3. And whenever the PLDT DSL modem breaks, PLDT replaces it, no cash out for us at all. We have been finished with the PLDT DSL lock-in period for years now, and they have been calling to get us to sign up for another lock-in period with some promo or other, but I always say no. I don’t want to tie myself up to another lock-in period. I also want to be able to switch as soon as they roll Fibr out in our area.

You can also ask your neighbors who are on DSL how the service is so you’ll have an idea of what to expect.

      Good luck! 🙂

    Hello,

    I can relate to diego.

Yesterday, I had a very bad internet connection. See, pag di ka talaga magagalit wla silang gagawin.

Thank you so much for this blog entry on PLDT Home Ultera. I was searching for alternatives to a DSL plan since I just got an SMS from PLDT saying that the result of their survey in our area is “No Facility”. Bummer! And our household didn’t even entertain any surveyors, if PLDT DOES have them.

Without a DSL or Fibr line, our household’s option would be 4G or LTE, but with the recent implementation of data caps, I feel hesitant to commit to a postpaid wireless plan. My line of work is home-based (medical and general transcription) and downloading audio files and uploading transcripts require a lot of bandwidth and at times, within a day, can exceed 1GB of data caps.

*sigh* This truly, is a frustrating situation in the Philippines. There is a growing number of home-based/outsourcing workers here, but the Internet providers are just too crappy! So sorry to be venting out here. 😛

Anyway, I would like to ask if you’ve ever experienced (or anyone in the comments section, for that matter) who have experiencing paying for the actual copper/fiber line of a DSL product just so it would reach your home? Say, you’re in an area not reached by a DSL but a nearby area or town does have a DSL, can you offer to pay for the fiber line just so you would have DSL?

Looking forward to replies/comments/suggestions. Thanks very much! 😀

Hello Recis! 🙂 I feel your pain! I KNOW that there is a growing number of people working online on odesk, elance, freelancer, etc… but the government is not doing anything to make the environment favorable for them. I really think it is a better way than going abroad because people get to stay with their families and children grow up with both parents.

I have no idea how much it is to pay for the installation of the DSL/Fibr line to your house. However, if you really need internet, I have a backup plan that you may be interested to know about.

Have you heard of Regus? I used to think that they are the expensive office rental place, but one time I researched it and found out that they have a thing for P1,190/month. The P1,190/month includes FREE INTERNET and unlimited coffee/tea and airconditioning! You buy the membership, and I think there is a minimum number of months (3 or 6, can’t remember).

Anyway, once you are a member, you can go to any of their offices in the Philippines – they have many offices all over Metro Manila and usually in very corporate, swanky buildings. For the P1,190 plan, you can stay in one of the tiny cubicles they call “pods”, as long as you want, until closing time (they keep business hours). You can only go to a particular site for x number of times a month, but no problem, once you reach the limit, you can go to another site instead. You have to pay for extras though, like copying, printing, etc… but the internet and coffee/tea and electricity for your laptop are free and the whole place is airconditioned 🙂

FYI, it’s something to consider if you really need a work environment with fast internet. I almost did last summer when it was so hot, but the thought of traffic stopped me. If you are interested, just visit them and take a quick tour of the facilities.

Don’t know if they have increased their prices, but as of a few months ago it was still P1,190 when I inquired.

Ano pong PDLT Plan yung walang data cap? Basta po ba PLDT DSL means kahit anung pong plan dun walang data cap? (Even plan 999). Meron din po bang PLDT DSL Plan na walang landlind kasi wala naman pong gagamit ng landline sa amin (but i think all DSL Plan should/really have landline, but just incase for less payment). Kung wala pong PLDT DSL na walang landline, does the payment of the landline is different from the plan 999 or is it included in 999? We are planning to subscribe to PLDT Plan Home DSL, meron po bang data cap ito? Salamat in advance.

Hi Ryoichi 🙂 At present, there is no data cap for PLDT DSL. I think they have a plan that is P999 that already includes a landline but has slower internet. They also have another plan that is P999 (3Mbps speed) and you also need to get a landline, so your total is around P1,600+. You need a PLDT landline for all DSL plans.

Late for me to see this blog. Still thankful. I could share my experience with ultera. An agent came to our house and offered ultera. I was hesitant to entertain the offer kasi ok naman ang smartbro 999. Naka lock in ako ng 36 months. After 2wks, eto na…. Na consumed na daw ang allowance ko for the month…. And to continue daw…. Mag booster. Naloka ako. I felt cheated, i was missold. This is fraud. Tumawag ako sa customer service, and told my story with their agent. I’m planning to waive the contract dahil hindi eto pinag usapan namin ng agent. Sagot ng customer service, mag investigate daw cla. At tawagan nila ako.

dati me nag-offer sa akin magupgrade ng smartbro upgrade to homebro pero hindi ko tinanggap kasi 7 years na ako smartbro user at kahit kailan hindi ko nagustuhan mag-renew ng contract. Paano ka ba naman gaganahan kung magrereklamo ka na mahina signal or walang signal at kukuha ka ng rebate kunwari lang silang makikinig at kukunin ung report pero the next and next and next day wala naman, parang wala kang nakausap at gumagastos ka lang ng load para tawagan sila at magkaroon ng kahit katiting na internet.

    Hi Barat Queen,

Im a current subscriber of Smart MyBro ( ung indoor black box nila not the canopy type). Kahapon may tumwag samen na smart agent & asking if we would lilke to migrate to ULTERA. My huband said,pag-iisipan niya & tawag sila ulit bukas. Good thing I read this blog ( and I really thank you for creating this <3) . But may concern is, if ever we decided to not to upgrade in ULTERA & just stay in the current plan we have, will Smart let us OR by force talaga na mag ULTERA kami? Hoping for your reply very soon! Thanks!

Alam nyo po ba kelan mapphased out ang smartbro canopy this year? Since december 19 pa kasi on and off connection ko and just last thursday parang mga ilang oras lang xa pwede then wala na naman. Wala pang tumatawag samin about the upgrade. Any replies would be very much appreciated.

this blog is really very helpful to me ‘coz i have been bugged by these pldt contractors about the migration of canopy to ultera. they have been persistently pushing us to accept though i have been consistently declining as well since my brother is already in a terrible situation right now with this ultera connection from day 1. But now my canopy connection had been totally disconnected already so i’m really scouting for a good internet plan that offers unli surfing like my previous canopy plan.
i have heard about tv cable providers who are now also offering internet connections bundled with their cable service. Do you happen to have anything to say about this? are they more reliable than pldt or globe?
hoping i can get feedback from you.
    thanks a lot

Hi Blue, thanks for your comment! 🙂 My uncle subscribed to Sky Internet without consulting me, and now he is regretting it. It’s very slow daw, his previous Globe Tattoo (1 Mbps speed) is faster pa daw. This is at the Sta. Mesa area.

As far as I know, the speed of cable internet is also affected by how many people are subscribed to the service in your area. Someone explained to me that the speed is split to the subscribers, so more subscribers means the total speed is split among more people, equals slower internet. You can ask other people in your neighborhood who have cable internet about the quality of service they are getting and then decide 🙂

The only things I can recommend are DSL and Fibr. They are definitely not perfect, but for me, they are the best out of all the available internet services in the Phils. The complaints about DSL are usually fewer and not as bad as the super slow speed of mobile internet / Ultera. The DSL complaints are usually about the slow installation by the technician, slow repair if a problem comes up, call center (agent) problems, modem problems, but generally the internet service is acceptable.

But DSL is not available everywhere, so the next best choice is to get a pocket wifi. The problem is they already removed the unlisurf type promos, so you are limited in terms of data, or have to resort to using “tips & tricks”.

      Hope that helps you 🙂

Hi Symon, based on feedback mabilis naman daw ang Ultera for the first 1GB or pag bago lang. Pero sabi ng iba bumabagal din. Also, malaking problema yung data cap dahil mabilis lang maubos ang 1GB. You can read all the comments here from other users para po alam niyo ang papasukan niyo kapag kumuha kayo ng Ultera 🙂

The only problem with this is the CAPPING.

I have no problems (yet) with browsing and downloading from torrents, BUT!!! as a (League of Legends) gamer, Ultera is a big problem. As in BIIIIIIIG problem. So if you’ll just use it for browsing and won’t exceed the data cap, go ahead. Avail the cheapest one. But if you use internet heavily, this is a HUUUUUUGE NO NO.

been there and still there. 🙁

Like I’m cursed by the internet God and I don’t know why I was cursed.

So for the readers of this blog, don’t go for Ultera. I mean it.

I still have my canopy up to now, I’m receiving calls since last year offering me a free ultera upgrade, so I always say “No” since i know that ultera is not good in our location, then last month field agents came here asking me to change to ultera still no, and just this morning another field agents are asking me to change our canopy to ultera, i just told them that i have an important business to attend and ask them to come back the other day, They might be here again tomorrow, I just want to know if I can insist to stay wit my canopy until the end of my active contract?, or I have no choice but to fall to their trap, My canopy is not that fast but I can live with it., any advice?, capping is not a good thing for me Youtube is my TV, I spend atleast 7 hours a day on youtube.,

Hi JC, I gather that PLDT will be phasing out canopy soon, so I don’t know if you will still be able to get internet by that time using canopy. Best is if you can find a way to switch to DSL or Fibr instead.

Wala pong data cap saken, smart bro canopy gamit ko since 2006.

I encountered a really annoying problem using HomeBro ULTERA. The thing is, they use NAT (Network Address Translation) so you share the same IP Address with many users and devices. So if one device is detected with a malware or virus, all those connected in the NAT is marked as malware-infected, and everytime you go to a site hosted by cloudflare you get an annoying captcha each time you visit.

Globe, PLDT should be owned and/or at least controlled by the Government. Only a pure number cruncher could come up with “UP TO” in their sales pitch.
It’s just pure hell to pay for 4Mbps and get .05 Mbps (30KBPS) up speed. I have had my cable connection for 15 yrs and it seems that it only continues to get worse each year. I tried filing complaint with the NTC, and these assholes don’t even show for the “hearing”.
If they are selling “X” Mbps and then turn around and limit you to “X” use, add in the “up to”, then you are paying for “X” but getting “Y” or “Z”.
In other words your buying a Porche, but getting a KIA without tires or engine.
    # yrs ago, my SmartBro pocketWifi put out 2000 KBps, over 1 wekk it went to 11kBps, and lets not even mention tech support, that in it’s self is a myth.

I’ve just moved house and was forced into getting this plan because nothing is available in my area no DSL no fiber no wired connections no slots at all. The despair on my face when I read your blog was terrible. I have a cellphone plan with globe its crap. The signal really bad here I get E, But somehow they still manage to send me the FUP every month and overcharge me. So I just stayed away from them. Anything with a cap is utter BS. Just a way of squeezing more money out of people when the bill is due.The infrastructure is already there.
And a daily cap? I’m against caps as a whole but even a monthly cap be better. Also can I still cancel? they havnt installed it yet Is there anyway of getting out of the 36 months.

A long time ago, I heard that the internet provided was Skycable was terribly slow, so that became my impression of it, and so I always stayed away.

Around early March, my uncle switched to Skycable without consulting me. He only told me about it to complain about how extremely slow it was. As in, he can’t even surf, let alone watch YouTube. He said his 1 mbps Globe pocket wifi was faster! I told him to just cancel. I don’t know if he was able to get out of his lock in period, I’ll have to ask him next time I see him.

So, at least in our experience, confirmed pa din na super bagal.

Salamat at naligaw ako sa blog mo..

Ngayon mas naliliwanagan na ko bakit ang dami kong issues sa smart bro canopy ko since february even if I was very satisfied sa past two years.. This might help the other readers here.

Under the table sya. Papalitan lang daw nila un atenna for corporate. upto 3MBPS daw. I paid the balance on the same day.

I’m also an online worker, specifically, a skype user kya kailangan ko tlga ng at least 1Mbps na download.

Ngayon, because of what I’ve read in your blog, it seems at least as for me, this is the way Smart bro is pestering me pra mag-upgrade sa ultera or mag change ng plan..

Wala naman tumawag skin pra mag-upgrade pero I was doing some research and I stumble on the offer of PLDT to upgrade to ultera for free, up to 2MBps and yes, it’s unlimited. I submitted an application and I’m expecting for a call in the next 48 hours. I have my doubts and thanks for the info here, I will be ready with my questions by the time a PLDT agent calls me.

I also submitted an application with globe dsl but I’m wishing there’s an available slot for me in our neighborhood or else I will not have a choice but to be stuck with pldt because my area is in the province.

Hello. I just want to share the same problem I’m having with my Ultera. I have been to the PLDT office several times already and I even wrote two letters regarding this. I’ve attached the latest one dated March 22, 2016:

This is a follow up to my previous letter of complaint dated February 18, 2016.

I am a home-based online freelancer. I have been a subscriber of your Smart Bro Canopy for several years. I encountered several issues with the Smart Bro service including service interruptions where I didn’t have any internet connection for several days on several occasions. But in spite of these experiences, I did not complain and have stayed as your loyal client throughout the years.

Last November 2015, without an earlier notice, my Smart Bro service was forcedly migrated to the new Home Bro Ultera without being informed of the very important changes that came with the new service. These changes, which I came to know just last month, include the 30GB data limit, the 3-year lock-in contract, and the limit of adding data volume only twice. I felt deceived in every way. What was worse was I also found out that those force-migration done starting December 2015 got to enjoy the same unlimited data just like the previous Smart Bro service. That is too much and it’s simply unfair.

As your loyal subscriber, I did not expect this kind of customer care and service from a big company like PLDT. I believe that those in charge lacked the coordination and did not properly disseminate detailed information regarding the Home Bro Ultera especially to your valued loyal clients.

The 3-year lock-in period doesn’t matter much to me but limiting me to 30GB for my existing plan is unacceptable considering constant use of data is very important with my line of work and that those who were migrated just a little later than mine were still offered the same unlimited data as before. In connection to this, I am requesting you to kindly cancel the data limit imposed on my subscription plan and revert it back to the previous unlimited data just like you’ve provided them to other subscribers like me.

I hope you will look into this matter and will take immediate action on this request. Thank you.

Yet, until now, I still have the data cap imposed on my plan. I have been following up, personally going to their customer service at the PLDT office. But the reply has always been the same, that only their central office in Manila has the authority over my case. What’s also very frustrating is that my 30GB lasts only until about half of the month when in fact, based on the Networx monitoring of my data usage, I have only used up less that 20GB. On my latest billing period, which was this March-April, my connection got cut-off only after 10 days after my billing cycle start. My Networx monitoring showed only about 6GB of data used during those 10 days.

This data cap is just so frustrating. I was just hoping that if only a lot more old Smart Bro Canopy subscribers who are experiencing this kind of problem could also complain, maybe they would revert them back to the unli data we’ve been used to.

Hi Atom, sorry to hear that. That’s really frustrating. Have you tried bugging them on social media like on their Facebook and Twitter? Sometimes they are more responsive to complaints on Twitter than on their Facebook page.

I hope this will get resolved for you soon! 🙂 Like some of the commenters have been saying, Smart has said that they will be removing the cap for those who migrated. Hope they implement that soon. Please keep us updated on what happens! 🙂

Hi cyberdiarynimonkey 🙂 thanks for reading!

The best talaga is to get a DSL or Fibr kasi unlimited. If those are not an option, prepaid LTE seems to be the better choice. Take advantage of their promos, tips & tricks nalang to get the most out of what you pay for internet.

Depende talaga sa area. Some people have told me that Smart Prepaid internet is actually faster than Smart Bro, pero baka sa area lang nila. Try mo nalang sila until you find the one that works best for your area 🙂 Good luck!

Im just curious if binago na kya nila to? i mean if adjusted sya from 30GB per month to higher GB’s? I am a Globe LTE Subscriber plan 999 and a computer shop owner who bought 6pc’s, also a gamer of DOTA2 and League of Legends. I just wonder kung mas maganda kya ‘tong ULTERA keysa s Provider ko, mostly kasi especially afternoon, hindi pwedeng magsabay ang online game sa youtube, I mean, kahit ano basta video streaming online na pinag uusapan, It’s so much LAG and DELAY sa game… Thanx much!

But actually sometimes ndi mapigilan kc it is a computer shop, many of our fellow doesn’t know about that, so ung iba, ndi mapigilan mainis, minsan ako din, hehe, but syempre quiet lng, business first 🙂 Until eto na nga, dumating na ung time na bumagal na tlga sya, even facebook ndi kna mka open maayos, unlike before, dati kasi even may ng oonline game, oks lng mg fb, but now laggy nrn kpag my fb n nka open. usual nmn aq ng rereset ng router q, pra ma refresh lng ung traffic bandwidth, dunno if oks nga un, but its better than nothing, so worst nun, may pmunta dto globe techy daw xa, then pa face out na daw ung router q which is B593s-931… so na replace nla ng something common to B44 ata un, then dati kc kapag ndi ko gnagamit ung NET even nka open nmn power nya, always sya red signal so you have to refresh your web every time mg co connect kna, either way open and close power mo sya until mag blue and full signal but it actually full 5 bars always pag my signal, means ndi sya nababa but nawawala! And ndi updated nmn aq s pag babayad, palagi pa nga sobra so may natitira pa sa account ko. Until bigla nnaman nagloko, so I decided na wag na magbayad, the sake naman na wala nman akong connection palagi! full payment then insufficient provider? WTF! Ayon naputulan nalng ako ng net. then one day may pumunta ulet for pull out, grabe galing mag sales talk! So in that case I gave my router and modem, they are riding on a motorcycle, I just noticed na luma na yung motorbike nlang gamit, but the no plate number and “for registration” Instead. So I decided to call globe on their CSR, they told me na, wala daw silng pinapa punta na tao whatever means, if ever, tatawag daw muna cla then ibibigay nila yung job order, meaning na illegal pull out na pla ako, worst pa nun, i have to pay almost 8 thousand for 2 unpaid months and the damages, also need dn nla ng police report. But until now ndi ko na binayaran un assuming black listed na ako sa globe. Sharing experience lng… then my question is, Ok dn kya ang smart bro LTE sa area namin? actually puro glbobe user kc dto, And for ULTERA naman, meron dn dto s site namin but mdjo malayo, i think 15mins away pag nilakad, pro parehas lng nmn ng height ang location, others said need daw g slots sa location, but i dont know kung para saan un… More power for this blog! tnx much!

Hi Levs, so sorry to hear about the illegal pull out of your router! 🙁 sana mahuli sila.

Note to self: starting now, remember to take a picture of people claiming to be from companies tapos kesyo kung ano ano daw ang kailangan nila

In my opinion, kung available, go for DSL or Fibr.

If your area already has LTE coverage, get prepaid LTE depending on which telco has the better service in your area. I won’t advise you to get a postpaid account because you can’t be sure if you will really get what you pay for, tapos you’re locked in, walang takas.

its not worth it! and thank goodness I found your blog about this, I’ve been controlling my frustrations over this new PLDT Home Ultera.

our original plan was Smart Bro Canopy until they upgraded us to this Ultera plan and much worst is that they are charging me for a monthly service fee, I emailed them about this but they did not respond, so I’m assuming that it was for the upgrade since it showed up on the bill after the upgrade to Ultera

now in regards to the speed, OMG! super bagal! I do online games on my free time and blogging, which I cant do anymore since super slow ng net!.

now I’m thinking of cancelling the account and switching to globe or to a different plan

(Take note: No installation fee so wala kaming binayaran pagkakabit.) Since no choice kami kasi ang inooffer lang nila sa area namin is Ultera. Ang current bill namin is P1896. Here is the computation:

    P699 (para sa monthly allowance) + P249 (volume booster 10GB) + P249 (another volume booster) = P1197

Ang expected namin na bill is P1197 lang. Ang masaklap dito may another P699 bakit ganun ang nangyari?

P699 (idinagdag ng PLDT) + P1197 (ang dapat na bill lang namin) = P 1896

Wala naman sa usapan na mag-aadvance sila. What the F!!

Hi Eagleman, thank you for sharing. Yung advance ng 1 month I think is medyo common practice, but it should have been explained to you kung ganoon nga. Yung natitirang unused GBs, they treat is as nabili mo na kasama sa P249, so kung nagamit mo or hindi, considered as nabenta na sayo yun… 🙁 if only naca-carry over yung unused data ok lang sana…

It’s like pag nag postpaid plan ka with 500 minutes, whether nagamit mo lahat or hindi yung 500 minutes, same price pa din babayaran mo sa plan… so just try to use it up nalang… watch some youtube pag malapit na sa cut off ng plan, ubos agad yun 🙂

Haysss nakakahinayang 3 years lock-in period pa naman.

Sadyang pinatay nila ang pagkakaroon ng competitor para they can retain higher price ng net. no other competitor, no chance of price down. so what kung mabilis, kung may DATA CAPPED naman… mabilis mauubos ang promo or load mo. sa dami ng ads sa net… you cant even upgrade ur mobilephone OS without worrying sa limited usage. these companies owe the people kasi hindi nmn nila binigay ung mga pinangako nilang net speeds for years tapos they easily find ways to increase bills. dapat imbestigahan yan ng gobyerno. several months ago ginisa ng senators ang telcos but still a little improvement at ang daming satsat na dahilan. i think the president should allow another telco to compete their price and services.

No way! simple lang dapat tutukan ni Pres Duterte yan, gawing Unlimited Internet in affordable price (Php 399/ month), no Data Capping, at kung magkakaganun, walang babayaran ang subscribers at sila pa ang magbabayad sa subscribers, at pag di nila sinunod yun, ipasasara ang PLDT at Globe, papapasukin ang competitor at ganito rin ang panatuntunan, or bibilhin ng gobyerno ang PLDT at Globe, pag iisahin magiging government na sila, magiging Philippine Government Telecom Company na ang pangalan.

I had been Ultera plan 1599 50GB subscriber since Aug 2015. I was also surprised about the advanced payment scheme of PLDT and at first their customer service wont admit it. The internet connection is fine getting up to 7Mbps(off peak hours) even my plan is just 5Mbps. The only regrets that I have is I have to pay 250.00 every month for 3 years on top of my reg monthl of 1599.00..

Also suprised that recently they cut the subscription amt to 999.00 on from 1599.00. but thats fine cant really do much about it as my wife need the reliable internet for her work.

Pero nagtataka ako kasi june 21 palang, naconsume ko nadaw ang 70% nlng monthly volume allowance nila s that time hindi nko mkpagbrowse s kht anung site except sa facebook. At gnwa ko nagbayad n agad ako ng fee ko which is 1737, 1099 for the month of june plus ung 638 daw n naconsume ko nung pakauna. So after ko magbayaf nging ok na sya. June 10-21. Please helllp.

data cap is not 1gb/day its 30gb/mo if tama ang naaalala ko.
with regards to billing, if i understands this right. kaya ida ang first billing, case kung in the middle of the cutoff nainstall, prorated and bill says nun. + 1 month advance.

    e.g.
    billing period 1-31
    nainsatall ng 15
    ang ibibill e 350 + 699

Hi A, thanks for clarifying 🙂 I wrote the blog post last April 8 2015 pa. I have not updated it since no one from PLDT Ultera has given me any new info naman… usually, companies contact me if they have something to clarify or have updates so I can also include the new info. Final decision is still mine, however.

Anyway, when I wrote the post last year I tried to be as accurate as possible based only on the info that was available to me online, and gave my opinion based on that information. Not much has changed yet, I think. The concerns brought up are still the same. If some big changes were made to the plans, like suddenly increasing the data cap significantly to reasonable levels, I would blog about it 🙂 Otherwise, seems like everything’s still the same. The addition of 20 GB per month per plan feels like a consuelo, imho. Just one day of Netflix marathon, ubos na yan 20GB.

But for those who don’t use a lot of internet, no YouTube addicts, no video streaming, Netflix, iflix, no gamers, etc… YES, ULTERA IS THE CHEAPEST MOBILE INTERNET right now at P20 per GB for plan 999.

But honestly, households with internet that don’t use some form of video streaming, YouTube, iflix, Netflix, VOIP, Skype, Viber, or don’t download games, etc.. is very rare.

      Reply
      1. A

Btw, iflix is whitelisted on their network so free access sya. And i think may free subscription ka for 1 year(for new subscriber) so di nya kakainin yung 30gig allowance. Other than that, rather, everything will consume your monthly allowance.

Thanks to your blog and all the comments. I am now convinced PLDT ultera is the worst. I feel like sinasadya rin netong mga to na hindi maglagay ng more “cabinets” in areas where its already considered “full” sa DSL/Broadband subscribers like Taguig. Kakainis, we had unlimited reliable PLDT connection sa Makati, then when I transffered into a new apartment in Taguig, they’re like “sorry we cant transfer your connection since there is no more space or “port” in your area for a DSL/Broadband connection, you should just have your internet daw disconnected.” Eto pa, ako pa papapuntahin sa pldt shop/service center nila with ID’s and stuff for the disconnection eh inamin na naman nung callcenter supervisor na kausap ko from PLDT na its their fault. If its their fault sana man lang they disconnected the line from their end and waived the fees na, since its their fault nga.

Nakakafrustrate na sa Philippines that only maybe 2 companies own all the TELCOs (Im not even sure if there are technically 2 companies lang, I feel like the investors who own both TELCO giants are actually one and the same set of investors). Grabe na ang only “cheapest” option natin is 1gb max per day for 50php per day or whatever cheaper na dadayain ka naman sa data consumption and hidden fees.

Argh… nakakainis.. those people who are already rich exploiting people like us who are only earning hand to mouth lang.

Remember nyo yung time na grabe and demand ng SUN sim because sa UNLIMITED CALLS AND TEXTS na they offered as opposed to Globe and SMart’s 1php per text? I remember so clearly!!! Highschool ako nun and texting was the shit (the shit – uso). If some form of telco is out there just biding their time sana naman they make their move soon!

Yes, I remember – I got a Sun plan within the first few weeks after they opened for business.

I think all ISP’s in Philippines now put a cap on usage. They call it unlimited, but they cut you off at .8 GB or below which amounts to about 1 hour of streaming. These ISP’s have taken a giant step backwards. Moreover they try to trick you and cheat you. Why do they advertise this as Unlimited? They do not tell you about further hidden charges and hidden contracts. Once you figure out that you have been victimized you can not get out for 1, 2, or 3 years.

SLOW INTERNET …Why blame the politikos for a very bad internet connection sa Pinas..blame also the home owners assoc and barangay officers why ?? If you have not work for a telco company before then READ THIS… how many signatutes it would take to put up a single Cell Site tower? 200 signatures…you have the…CITY COUNCIL..CITY MAYOR..BARANGAY COUNCIL..NTC..DOT..and even DENR..yup DENR finally you have 80% of the signatures then suddenly the homeowners assoc does not want a cell site near there place coz radiation will give kill them so you need to look for another site again and the signature dance goes all over again..by the time a new site is found the load of the old cell sites are already max out..and the new cell tower is not operational…one thing ironic is that people who oppose putting up cell sitrs near there place are the one who complain the most …lol

Thanks for sharing that perspective! I also don’t get why homeowners associations charge people just to install something like cable or a telephone line.

When a friend of mine moved to a new place, he wanted to get a PLDT DSL connection. Everything was ok with PLDT but the homeowners assoc insisted on charging P3,000 for installation fee. Sus, di naman sila ang nag install. They literally did not do anything but let the PLDT installers inside the subdivision. And they earned P3,000 just like that!

Sorry, I can’t think of any other good alternative to DSL or Fibr. Yun lang talaga. It’s very frustrating whenever I hear people tell stories of how they are always told that there’s no available PLDT line in their area so they can’t get DSL.

It’s been years since I’ve been hearing people complain about this, after all this time, have they actually added any new lines to serve the demand?

With DSL, you get unlimited internet. With mobile internet like Ultera, it is capped. You won’t be able to enjoy things like watching iflix or Netflix the whole day during weekends 🙁

You’d be better off using a pocket wifi nalang. At least with a pocket wifi, you can register to a promo that fits your needs, change to another promo if your needs change, and easily switch to another network if the service sucks. Meanwhile, don’t stop trying to get a DSL or Fibr connection 🙂

I’m using Smart LTE Pocket wifi right now (the highest mbps it can reach is 3) and yes meron sa area namin na 4G , pag titiyagaan ko na lang kaya ito? dahil walang lines and dsl at fibr ( meron kaming katabing subdivision na may pldt fibr which is good kasi baka pwede kami mag request na mag ka pldt fibr na rin sa brgy namin)

I have just availed this volume boosters of PLDT Ultera. The service sucks. The speed is good but the gap, it really frustrate me. Akala ko bibilis ang internet with this administration pero POTAINA. Ok na ko sa dati. Di ko agad nabasa mga gantong forum. Nagkamali ako.
